Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small toddler when her father who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth attended the school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting career. This was not an easy path to take. While she was offered an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs was offered. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting and moving back to Boston. It was there that she was able to earn a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
